Yes, everyone’s hitting the 2,000-point milestone this year

You’re not imagining things. There’s been a ton of guys breaking the 2,000-point barrier this season.

There have been 488 D-I players who’ve scored 2,000 career points. Since Loyola’s Jim Lacy first hit the milestone in 1949, that’s about 10 guys a year joining the club.

The season there could be as many as 23 hitting that mark, which would tie 1989 as the most in one season.

So, Brendan Prunty of the Newark Star-Ledger asked, ?

“The guys that are doing it are guys that stay for four years,” ex- Boston College coach Al Skinner told Prunty. “There are some very good college players who are staying for four years because they’re not quite pros, who can score points. A guy who’s clearly a pro guy will stay for a year or two and then he’s out.”
That includes guys like BYU’s Jimmer Fredette and Seton Hall’s Jeremy Hazell, both of whom have lit up the scoreboard in their careers but have passed on the NBA for various reasons. But it doesn’t include the mid-major stars like Charles Jenkins and Charleston’s Andrew Goudelock. They found places where they could thrive.

“It speaks to the value of kids picking the right places to go play,” St. Joseph’s coach Phil Martelli told Prunty. “Kids are being a lot brighter in their decision-making. They’re picking places where they can play sooner, rather than later. A lot of their decision-making is based on, ‘How many shots can I get as a freshman?’”
It’s all part of a delightful series of stories Prunty wrote on guys who hit 2,000 points. Also in the mix is a , a , how the 3-point line and my favorite, odds and ends from .

The best nuggets from that piece:

  • While Cal does not have a 2,000-point scorer, Cal Poly (Chris Bjorklund’s 2,006 points) does.
  • The three programs in D1 history with the most wins (Kentucky, UNC, Kansas) have a combined 12 2,000-point scorers. The three with the most losses (Brown, Yale, VMI) have six.
  • Lamar (1981: Mike Oliver- 2,518; B.B. Davis- 2,084), Loyola-Marymount (1990: Hank Gathers- 2,490; Bo Kimble- 2,010), Oklahoma (1987: Tim McCalister- 2,275; Darryl Kennedy- 2,097) and Vermont (2005: Taylor Coppenrath- 2,442; T.J. Sorrentine- 2,013) are the only schools to have two players score 2,000 points in the same class.
