North Carolina will join the club in 2011-12. The fancy jersey club, that is.
The Tar Heels will join a handful of other schools (Texas, Ohio State, Kentucky, Duke among them) who wear the Nike HyperElite jersey. That’s Tyler Zeller making the first public appearance at Thursday’s team media day. If it sounds all fancy and calls for a drastic change, it’s not.
The front isn’t any different. The back has an aerographic design that features the Old Well (a school landmark) and the outline of the state of North Carolina and a basketball. That’s it.
Looks nice, though.
Initial fan reaction wasn’t as kind, as Jeff Eisenberg noted yesterday.
But if I’m a Carolina fan, you may not want to disparage the jerseys too much. If the Tar Heels cut down the nets in April, the jerseys may be here to stay. Ask Denver Broncos fans how the transition to new jerseys in 1997 went. (Not that they lasted…)
And no title? Well, I know where the jerseys will end up.
